Requesting a Specific Volume

Best practices indicate that all volumes for a title should be cataloged under one record.  Depending on the cataloger, this may not always be the case.  If the volumes have separate item records, the patron or staff member can request volumes individually, like requesting separate titles.

ComCat cannot place a hold on a particular volume in a set if they are cataloged as one record.  Staff will need to pay attention to notations in the request record if the patron is looking for a specific volume.

If a staff member is requesting a specific on behalf of a patron:

1. Search for an item and bring up the item record. If the item record consists of multiple different volumes, you can usually find volume information in the "Where to find it" display by looking at Call number.

In this case, we can see that North Shore Community College has three volumes.

2. Click "Request this item" to start the request. Search and select the patron.

3. In the request form, in the "Specific Volume Needed" field, enter information regarding volume needed.

Additionally, you may use the "Borrower's note" field to add more information.

5. Submit the request

Please note: ComCat cannot handle more than one item barcode per request. If the patron is looking for volumes 1, 2, and 3, the borrowing library needs to submit three different requests and specify the volume sought in each request. The lending library will need to pay attention to the notes and fill the requests accordingly, as ComCat will not automatically "grab" the barcode of the correct volume in your system. Please don't hesitate to submit a ticket if you need any assistance with handling a multi-volume request as a borrower or lender.
