Requesting Serials

When users (staff or patrons) attempt to place requests on items that are cataloged as serials or periodicals, they may be unable to complete the request in ComCat. This is due to a longstanding bug in ComCat, where requests on items of these types default to a Non-returnable request type, which is not allowed in ComCat.

If the item is a Serial or Periodical, this is visible from the results page.

What happens when I try to submit the request?

When staff go to request the item, after they enter the patron's credentials in the user lookup, they will see a Copyright Notice pop-up. This shows because it is Non-Returnable request type. Patrons trying to directly request serial items will also see this pop-up when they go to request.

Even if the user clicks "Yes" and completes the request form, they will not be able to submit the request. When the user clicks "submit" to submit the request, the request will never submit. They may see a spinning circle over the submit button as if this is processing, but it will never go through.

What do I do now?

Please submit a ticket to the Helpdesk and include information about the item you are trying to request and the patron's barcode in the ticket. We can submit the request for you.
